► (1813-37) Escritor romántico alemán. Obras: La muerte de Danton, Leoncio y Lena (1836) y la inacabada Woyzeck (teatro), y la novela inconclusa Lenz.

(17 oct. 1813, Goddelau, Hesse-Darmstadt–19 feb. 1837, Zürich, Suiza).

Dramaturgo alemán. Mientras estudiaba medicina se involucró en actividades políticas radicales y fue obligado a huir a Zürich. Ahí escribió piezas que se caracterizaron por una vívida imaginación y una estructura poco convencional, combinando un intenso naturalismo con cierto poder visionario. Se le considera el precursor del movimiento expresionista. A su primera obra La muerte de Danton (1835), un drama sobre la Revolución francesa, le siguió Leoncio y Lena (1836), una sátira sobre las ilusiones del romanticismo. Su última obra, Woyzeck (1836), se anticipó al teatro social de la década de 1890, con su compasión por los pobres y los oprimidos. En ella se basa una famosa ópera de Alban Berg.
